Swiftlet rearing a lucrative business

MIRI: Swift or ‘burung walet’ breeding can be a lucrative source of income for those in the sub-urban and rural areas, says Assistant Minister of Tourism Datuk Talib Zulpilip.

“The breeding of swifts for edible nest is considered easy as what the entrepreneur needs to know is the whole process from the management of capital, cost, maintenance to the market of the products,” he said during the closing ceremony of the ‘Management and Maintenance of Swifts Nest House’ course held at Miri Library Auditorium on Tuesday.

The two-day course, which was organised by SEDC, was attended by 112 participants.

The aim of the course was to raise awareness on the potential of swift breeding industry and to educate the participants on how to build proper and cost-effective breeding houses for the birds.

Calling it a high impact industry, Talib said it has a high potential of success in the sub-urban and rural areas due to availability of land and good air quality.

“The government encourages those who are interested in the bird breeding business by providing licensing and endorsement,” he added.

With the country now producing an average of 250 metric tonnes of birds’ nests annually with a market value of RM1 billion, he said the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry targets a production of 500 metric tonnes worth RM5 billion by 2020.
